These crimes involve a person or people illegally gaining money, goods or services.
Burglary
To enter or attempt to enter any building, structure, tent or caravan that is normally inhabited, without consent and in order to commit a crime such as stealing.
Offenders can be jailed for up to 20 years and can receive an automatic penalty (without a trial) of up to 3 years’ jail-time and a $36,000 fine.
Stealing/Receiving stolen goods
Stealing means to unlawfully take or obtain money, goods or services without using force, threats, coercion or deception, and intending to permanently deprive the owner of the money or goods.
Receiving stolen goods is receiving, handling or processing money or goods that have been taken or gained illegally.
The penalties for these crimes include imprisonment for up to 14 years.
Home invasion
Wrongfully entering an occupied home or associated place, while forcibly confining the occupants in the premises, and committing assault or battery against them.
Together, assault and battery are defined as unlawfully touching a person without their permission. Assault refers to an act that creates fear and a perceived ability for a threat to be carried out. Battery is the act itself.
Robbery
Stealing something while using or threatening to use violence against someone or their property.
Penalties include imprisonment from 14 years to a life sentence.
