A Statewide Crime Stoppers campaign to tackle drug dealing in WA is creating a big increase in crime reports from the public.
Conducted in regional areas, the Dob in a Dealer campaign has increased the number of drug-related reports received at Crime Stoppers by around 50%.
Crime Stoppers WA CEO Kim Harrison has launched the campaign in centres across most of the State in the past 4 months, including Broome, Karratha, Geraldton, Northam, Bunbury, Albany, Kalgoorlie and Esperance. The final launch will be held in Perth in August.
Operational results are already showing the impact of the Dob in a Dealer campaign. For instance, 60 police raided 12 properties and charged 14 people with 29 offences in the Bunbury area.
South West Inspector Peter Morrissey said the operation in Bunbury was a direct response to the Crime Stoppers campaign and information provided by the public has proved invaluable.
A ‘significant’ amount of drugs and firearms were also seized by police from Geraldton, Dongara and Port Denison properties as this campaign continued to get results in WA’s Mid West.
Police said 35 arrests were made, resulting in seizures of drugs and weapons estimated at more than $50,000.
“This has taken a lot of work in partnership with WA Police and local government,” said Mr Harrison. “It is very pleasing to see how well the community is responding in every region.”
This is part of a national campaign funded by the Australian Government.
