Crime Stoppers WA celebrated its 20th anniversary at a special cocktail function on 16 February 2015.
The function also marked National Crime Stoppers Day as well as the launch of Crime Stoppers Week in Western Australia.
VIPs included Hon. Liz Behjat (representing the Minister for Police), WA Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan and Crime Stoppers WA Chairman Nick Stagg.
Crime Stoppers WA Chief Executive Officer Kim Harrison said the celebrations were a good way to reflect on the impact that Crime Stoppers WA has had over the past 20 years while also creating greater community awareness of the ongoing role Crime Stoppers plays in the WA community.
“Crime Stoppers Week saw an array of community-focused activities that received a really positive response from the public,” said Mr Harrison.
“This year we will also be introducing several new activities through our redeveloped website, which will enable people to be more directly involved in reducing crime rates and understanding the actions they can take to prevent crime in their community.”
A special marquee was set up in the Murray St Mall, which was used as a base each day for volunteers and staff to engage the public about the important role Crime Stoppers plays in the community and encourage them to sign up to a Crime Stoppers newsletter.
Also featured was a Constable Care puppet show designed to educate children on the three important numbers they should call for help. The presenters showed in an entertaining way how the audience could call 000 for emergencies, 131 444 for police assistance and 1800 333 000 to report criminal behaviour.
Every day during the week The West Australian published feature articles on the role of Crime Stoppers and on the most common crimes such as drug use, arson, burglary and vehicle theft, as well as how to avoid becoming a victim of crime.
