A record number of Western Australians are using Crime Stoppers to report crime
Helping to combat crime is the work of Crime Stoppers. We empower everyone to play their part by providing a service that enables them to prevent and anonymously report suspicious and criminal behaviour.
In October 2015 a record number of more than 140 people on average every day played their part by contacting Crime Stoppers to report their concerns about criminal behaviour they had observed or come across.
Over 60% of these reports were converted into actionable police intelligence, which is one of the best results in Australia. (Police need enough practical detail in the information they receive to enable them to follow up leads.)
In 2014-15, a total of 43,519 people in Western Australia. These contacts resulted in 23,560 actionable intelligence reports that led to more than 600 arrests and many more charges. You can read more about our role here.
With the introduction of the new Crime Stoppers WA website in August, the number of online reports made by the public to date in 2015 has increased by 40% over last year.
Crime Stoppers WA Chief Executive Officer Kim Harrison said these results were excellent and reflected the trust that people have in the service.
“Also, many people are prepared to take action as good citizens when they come across others who are engaging in criminal behaviour,” he said. “This helps to create a safer and more satisfying community for families.”
