Four south of the river supermarkets were the target of a stylishly dressed cigarette lover who made multiple fraudulent transactions in quick succession to obtain hundreds of dollars in cigarettes.

Sometime between 7.00am and 10.30am on Saturday the 30th of June 2012, the victim parked his car inside the backyard of a relative’s house on Cleopatra Street, Palmyra. Whilst the car was unattended, unknown offender/s have taken the man’s wallet from inside the car. The wallet contained credit and debit bank cards and his driver’s license.

Unaware of the accidental loss until later that day, an opportunistic thief utilised the Pay Pass, swipe and go payment system to make seven fraudulent transactions at four local supermarkets in Melville, Myaree and Kardinya to purchase cigarettes totalling $928.00.

With the payment system accepting transactions under $100 without a signature or a pin the opportunistic fraudster took less than 90 minutes to carry out seven fraudulent transactions using the card.

Upon discovering the loss the victim made a call to his bank to cancel the card when he was alerted about the fraudulent purchases.
