Sadly, at just 16 years of age, Maybell Yamalulu’s body was discovered in bushland west of Fitzroy Crossing on the 5th of February, 1983.
Three elderly Aboriginal men found her decomposed body whilst they were hunting near a dam site situated only 13 kilometres west of the Fitzroy Crossing Township.
There were tyre tracks leading into the bush where Maybell’s body was found and also returning to the dam area.
Investigations revealed there were no crocodiles in this dam. It is probably for this reason that the dam was a popular recreational spot utilised by local residents for swimming and barbecues.
Last seen alive on the 14th of January, 1983, Police still remain hopeful that someone may know something that will help uncover the truth about the circumstances surrounding her death.
What Police do know is that on that day Maybell visited a trucking yard just out of town during the late afternoon to socialise with her brother, sister and friends.
After spending some time together the group were dropped off at the Windmill Reserve. Later that evening Maybell was sighted around the Crossing Inn Hotel which was the last known location where she was seen alive.
A post mortem examination confirmed she had been the victim of a brutal assault which ultimately led to her death.
