Over 275 calls have been made to Crime Stoppers since the police announced the breakthrough arrest of Mr Edwards on December 22, 2016 over the Claremont serial killings.
Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan revealed that 48-year-old Kewdale man Bradley Robert Edwards had been charged with the wilful murders of Jane Rimmer and Ciara Glennon in 1996 and 1997.
Mr O’Callaghan said news of the arrest might jog some people’s memories and urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
Mr Edwards is also charged with two separate sex attacks on young women. The former Telstra technician’s case was adjourned for two months and he was remanded in custody at Hakea Prison.
Mr Edwards has not been charged in relation to the disappearance of the first suspected Claremont serial murder victim Sarah Spiers, whose body has never been found. The investigation into her disappearance remains ongoing.
Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Brown said he expected Mr Edwards’ legal process to be “long, drawn-out and complex” but it came after two decades of “meticulous and relentless” police work.
“It wasn’t perfect, it won’t be seen as being perfect in the cold, hard light of day, and it will be judged by the judicial system, and a jury, or whatever that process ends up being over time,” he told 6PR Radio.
With advances in DNA technology and extra resources allocated to cold cases, Mr Brown said “we’re getting some results and it’s not over yet”.
“The community can expect over the coming years, we will see more of these sorts of results, that is my prediction and I hope that is the case because there are a lot of family members and friends who are left behind without their loved ones who also want a result more than anybody and we stand side-by-side with them,” he said.
In another cold case murder, more than 90 calls have been made to Crime Stoppers since police launched a fresh appeal this month into the 1997 killing of 11-year-old Gerard Ross in Rockingham.
